What is Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities?

A person is determined to have an intellectual/developmental disability based on the following three criteria: intellectual functioning level (IQ) is below 70-75, significant limitations exist in two or more adaptive skill areas, and the condition is present from childhood (defined as age 18 or less).

How many levels of intellectual disabilities are there?

• Mild intellectual disabilities – IQ level 50-55 to approximately 70
• Moderate intellectual disabilities – IQ level 35-40 to 50-55
• Severe intellectual disabilities – IQ level 20-25 to 35-40
• Profound intellectual disabilities – IQ level below 20 or 25

Adaptive functioning refers to how effectively people cope with common life demands and how well they meet the standards of personal independence.
